Decolonization was one of the great historical events of the twentieth century and a remarkable achievement for the peoples of Africa. 2010 marks 50 years of Independence for many African countries and in this period, the African continent has achieved unprecedented economic growth and success, emerged as a global player and made huge strides in democracy however Africa has also had its share of challenges.
WAM- NY warmly invites you to join us in a panel discussion, dialogue and reflections on Africa 50 years after Independence with 2 distinguished leaders from Africa:

Background on the guest speakers and moderator
Dr. Akwasi Aidoo - Dr. Aidoo is the founding and current President and CEO of TrustAfrica, one of the largest Foundations based in Africa, dedicated to securing democracy and equitable development and investment in Africa. He has extensive experience in philanthropy and leadership in Africa. He has received many international leadership awards and is recognized as one of the leading figures in philanthropy globally. His previous positions include, Head of the Ford Foundation's offices in Senegal and Nigeria, and Director of the Ford Foundation's Special Initiative for Africa in New York. Dr. Aidoo has served as a director and is chair on the boards of several organizations, including Resource Alliance, Oxfam America, International Beliefs and Values Institute, the Fund for Global Human Rights, Africa Grantmakers' Affinity Group, Resource Alliance and Amandla Development.
Dr. James Mwangi - Dr. Mwangi is Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director of Equity Bank of Kenya. Equity Bank of Kenya's mission is to be the champion of the socio-economic prosperity of the people of Africa. In 2010 Dr. Mwangi was ranked by the Financial Times among the world's 50 most influential business leaders of the emerging markets. In 2009 Dr. Mwangi was named the Ai100 Chief Executive of the year by the African Investors and the Common Wealth Business Councils African Business Man of the Year. Dr. Mwangi is a member of Frontier 100 Initiative for Global Development, an initiative to bring together frontier market CEO's and US based CEO's committed to international development.
Ms. Mary Ellen Iskenderian - Ms. Mary Ellen Iskenderian is President and CEO of Women's World Banking (WWB), the world's largest network of microfinance institutions and banks. Ms. Iskenderian leads the WWB global team, in providing hands-on technical services and strategic support to 40 top-performing microfinance institutions and banks in 28 countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
