Design thinking techniques for non-profits & entrepreneurs
(http://skl.sh/JlRowC) Monday, June 11th, 2012, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, Grind Co-Working Office Space (419 Park Ave South, 2nd Floor, New York, NY) Cost: $20

Design thinking can be used to solve real world problems and is a technique that can be used by design or non-designer to approaches every day challenges. This workshop will introduce practical design thinking and idea generation techniques for individuals who are entrepreneurs, working in non-profits and/or someone looking to resolve challenges in their office. We will brainstorm ideas, push them to their limits, and pilot test them to determine the ones worth developing. By attending this workshop, participants will learn how to advance their creative thinking and idea assessment skills essential to creating, developing, and growing a successful project, company and/or idea.

Throughout this workshop, you will learn:
1. ‘How to’ do empathic research: Empathic research is similar to 'ethnographic research' - which is to gain a deep understanding of how people live their lives. This workshop will train you in some key methods in understanding your community and/or client.
2. ‘How to’ team-design: Learning how to bring a range of individuals together to co-create solutions that meet the needs of the community or people using the service or product.
3. ‘How to’ pick an idea: Learning how to narrow down ideas without getting overwhelmed by the small details, the costs and negativity.

This workshop is not a quiet taking-notes kind of class, everyone will be participating, coming up with ideas, and going through the techniques. You will walk away with a cheat-sheet on how to bring these techniques into their regular work life.

Finding influences: engagement tools for non-profts & start-ups.

Wednesday June 6th 2012, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM, Grind Co-Working Office Space (419 Park Ave South, 2nd Floor, New York, NY) Cost: $20

No matter where you are in the development process of your organization, idea, start-up and/or non-profits, identifying new opportunities to engage with your community/client can be a challenge. This workshop will provide a hands-on approach to the practice and how to apply the principals of ‘design thinking’ to uncover the influencers and values of your community/client.

Uncovering the influences are an important step to reaching your target market. Influencers are external factors (including individuals/groups) and ideals that effect individual behaviors. Whether it’s understanding who your community seeks advice from or listens to on the radio, understanding influencers give you the insight into why people behave as they do, who they interact with regularly and allows for new opportunities of future engagement.

Within this workshop you will learn:
1. 'How to' do empathic research: Empathic research is similar to 'ethnographic research' - which is to gain a deep understanding of how people live their lives
2. 'How to' develop your own community/client influencer map. How and where to look for these external factors, help understand who your audience is and where they can be reached.
3. 'How to' turn the influencers into opportunities. Look at case studies of other organization/companies finding new and impact way engage their communities /clients.

This workshop is not a quiet taking-notes kind of class, everyone will be participating and going through the techniques. You will walk away with a cheat-sheet on how to bring these techniques into their regular work life.
