Tagai - NYC Mentoring organization event July 7

Meet Adam, founder of a mentoring organization called Tagai in NYC.  He's a StartingBloc Fellow (NY Institute, 2010) and is hosting an event at Revival Bar in Union Square on July 7. (I've been to Revival and it's a great place to hang out!)
Happy schmoozing,
Katharine

---

I (Adam Winski) am the co-founder and director of Tagai which is a cultural exchange program matching a broad array of young professionals with recently immigrated high school students.  We strive to pair those of like mind but unlike culture with an aim towards opening up new worlds for all participants.

Mentors and students spend time exploring New York City with an eye towards helping students explore their current interests and discover new ones.  This year we also had the privilege of visiting Acumen Fund's headquarters, TED's headquarters and helping JR fulfill his TED Wish by doing a large group action for the Inside Out Project.

This coming year, we will be expanding into a second school, the Brooklyn International High School and are seeking curious and driven people such as yourselves to join our growing ranks.

To find out more, please join us:
Thursday, July 7th at 7:00PM
Revival (129 E. 15th Street, between 3rd and Irving).

Hope to see y'all there!

Global Sourcing Council Webinar Sustainable Sourcing as a Path to Innovation

You can access the recording here: Webinar Recording

Program Details
Sustainability 1.0 focused on Planet (environmental). Sustainability 2.0 is taking shape as transparency of socially responsible practices. It means a triple bottom line, which encompasses: people, planet, profit. Sustainability wisdom and leadership is built into the DNA of successful companies and communities. Join us for this webinar on Sustainable Sourcing as a path to Innovation to see how it is possible to source for sustainability and develop socially responsible innovative solutions that make a difference on the bottom -line whilst making a difference in the lives of communities:  those who are at the bottom of the pyramid.
Distant Village - an award-winning sustainable design and production firm producing handmade packaging and products from natural materials will share experiences of how Innovative design and triple-bottom-line sustainability is at the foundation of everything they create.
The Rockefeller Foundation will share its PRIDE (Poverty Reduction through Information and Digital Employment) initiative which is aimed at enhancing innovation amongst the rural poor whilst bringing them in line with the broader forces of globalization of services.  The Rockefeller Foundation's PRIDE work is aimed at creating sustainable employment opportunities for people at the base of the pyramid by fostering a critical new arm of the outsourcing industry called Impact Sourcing (IS).  Through its support of IS, Rockefeller will work to nurture and scale up the establishment of an industry that employs poor or marginalized populations in Africa, providing them an opportunity to improve their lives and to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

Moderator     : Pumela Salela, Chair of Programs, Global Sourcing Council
Our Speakers :
Frank Casale, Founder, CEO, The Outsourcing Institute
Rich Cohen, Founder and President, Distant Village

Sept. 23 TEDxEast Salon - with Dan Ariely ('Predictably Irrational' Author)

If you're interested in behavioral economics, applied psychology, or generally just the awesomeness  of TED talks but local to NYC....Check out TEDxEast.  They used to have a yearly conference but now their focus is several smaller "salon" events, as noted below.  Save the date!
Cheers,
Katharine
--------------------------

June 23, 2011

Our first guest curator...will be Dan Ariely.

For us, it is time to do things a little differently.   In that vein,  we would like to bring some fresh perspectives to TEDxEast.  To achieve this, we have decided to host 4 smaller events over the next 9 months, TEDxEast Salons, with no more than 100 attendees.  These salons will take place in September, November, January and March; before our next BIG event May 2012.  To keep things really interesting, we are inviting guest curators to plan the program for these events.  We are pleased to share that Dan Ariely has agreed to curate the first in this series of TEDxEast Salons.

This TEDxEast Salon will take place on Friday, September 23, 2011- save the date.  For these events there are no applications.  We will alert you when tickets go on sale (sometime soon) and with the small size,  encourage you to invite your friends to join us and be part of the TEDxEast community.

About Dan Ariely:

Ariely was a physics and mathematics major at Tel Aviv University. He also holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in cognitive psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Ph.D. in business from Duke University. After obtaining his PhD degrees he taught at MIT between 1998 and 2008, before returning to Duke University as James B. Duke Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics. Apart from his prolific academic writing, he published two popular books, one titled Predictably Irrational, and the other titled The Upside of Irrationality, both of which became New York Times best sellers.

Walk Brooklyn - Bedford Avenue, Saturday 6/18

This is something that my friends are doing that you can also come check out, and maybe do on your own sometime too!
Cheers,
Katharine

----

This Saturday will be one of the bigger field trips of the summer: The Bedford Avenue Walk. We'll see 5 or 6 neighborhoods, and a true cross-section of the ethnic and architectural diversity of the borough of Brooklyn.

Here's the deal:

TIME: 10:30am to eat and mingle. We're leaving at 11:00 with or without you! Be sure to check your trains for weekend service changes http://travel.mtanyct.info/serviceadvisory/

START: Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop, 727 Manhattan Avenue (close to the Nassau Ave stop on the G). If it's crowded we'll loiter outside. Bonus points if you take the new East River Ferry to Greenpoint (it opened today and is free for the first 10 days!). http://www.nywaterway.com/ERF-Home.aspx

ROUTE: We'll walk south on Bedford all way to Sheepshead Bay (10.2 miles) then cut over the Brighton Beach and possibly Coney Island. It should take about 3 hours end-to-end, longer if we make any stops.

BRING: Comfortable shoes (think 10 miles + 80 degrees), bathing suit for post-walk cool-down.

Contact kbierce [at gmail <dot> com] if you're interested in this!

Digital DUMBO Workshop Series - Think, Don't Plan: Disruptive Business Strategy Tactics (lunch included!)

Special Note: The Digital DUMBO Workshop Series is new event programming from Digital DUMBO. This is not to be confused with our free monthly event!

Workshop Description:

Anyone who has set up a business knows that a business plan is obsolete from the moment that it is printed. At best it helps create a centre or a vision for the business, however when the brain becomes attached to a concept it looses its ability to problem solve in an innovative manner. For this reason IEA, the Innovation agency behind WECREATE NYC, has developed tools for a flexible business model, which will help move your business forward while leaving room for innovative problem solving.

Key Topics:
  • Tools for business strategy
  • Find the core of your business to create sustainability faster
  • How the brain views planning and its psychology

About the Speaker:

Araceli Camargo-Kilpatrick received her MA in English from Kings College London and from there went on to create the first innovation space in London called THECUBE. She is currently researching neurology and the plasticity of the brain. She is also exploring energy and quantum physics in an aim to understand how the brain works, how we perceive things, and how to encourage success in the idea implementation process.
