Tech and innovation events in NYC this week

I know it's not necessarily kosher to post just lists of events in a blog, but my consulting job keeps me super busy and copy-pasting is fast.  My modus operandi is to put in cool events I like best to my Google Calendar at the bottom of this blog on weekends when I have more time, in case you're wondering, dear readers.
Happy networking!

NYC events in design and social impact this week

From my friend and networking buddy Brielle -

Wednesday, February 2

7:00pm Live With Design Explores Social Design Manifestos

This month Live With Design meets with Manifesto Makers to discuss how to approach creating a manifesto and explore the challenges/victories experienced during the making process.
A social design manifesto brings to the forefront a set of ideas and intentions. They showcase the “why?” behind the “what” – that message that makes us into believers. They are call to action. Their function is to locate and ignite the “us.”
Urshula Barbour is a designer/writer/educator and founder, Pure + Applied Design Studio www.pureandapplied.com She’s responsible for designing the first edition of Design Like You Give a Damn .
David and Mike Radparvar, founders of Holstee, www.holstee.com, created their manifesto as the anthem that embodies the reason for what they do – “selling kick ass products, sustainably made, with social impact”.
Interactive Exercise: Led by Pritha RaySircar, Founder & Chief MAKEr of theMAKE www.themake.org/ which is a social activation model.
Please bring a t-shirt that needs to be re-purposed!

Confirmed Speakers:

AARON HARMON: “Person Prototypes”
When was the last time you told someone giving you directions that you were "Recalculating Route?"  Why do devices that we talk to fail to speak to us in conversational language? This short talk will provide a "how-to" on prototyping conversational interfaces using people.

Harmon is a mobile specialist at NBC Universal. He spent a few years helping devices listen (and speak!) at Nuance Communications.

ADAM LEIBSOHN: “Don't Be Scared of Your Data”
As you're reading this description on Eventbrite, you're creating data that someone else will use... for better or worse. Let's take a look at what we could do if we shared more data with each other... for the benefit of each other.

Liebsohn is the Director of Communications strategy at Anomaly where he studies how people and culture are changing the technology we use and the media we consume. Those insights–combined with a love for data and tech–led him to become the founder and creator of voyurl.com,  which just launched in beta. Voyurl is a service founded on the premise of open data; it constantly keeps a dynamic archive of users' clickstreams with the goal of capturing data that gives users rich insight into their behavior and better content recommendations.

ALEX GODIN: “Highschool In the Age of the Hacker: What's Wrong and What's Right with the High School System”
Early last September two big things happened to Alex. He attended his first New York Tech Meetup, and he launched a startup in 48 hours at NYC Startup weekend (The startup was called Foodo and we took home the grand prize for the weekend). However, two days later he found himself sitting in high school chemistry class, wishing he was hacking away on other projects. This talk will cover what school teaches an up and coming hacker: Teachers are just like clients, how to do something you don't want to do, and how to fake your way through anything.

Godin is a 17 year old high school student who likes startups, internet culture and filmmaking. When he’s not working on school work, he’s hacking away on various startup projects at New Work City. He recently led the team that won the New York City Startup weekend with the following pitch: http://vimeo.com/14924790

CHERYL HELLER: ”One single answer to all the world’s problems”
Feminine energy is not limited to gender, rather it’s the approach to life that is based on integration and collaboration, working together to highlight shared strengths and carry them forward. This mentality is the hope of social innovation – a systemic approach to improving the world.

Heller is a communication strategist, writer, designer, and educator who uses communication design to transform organizations into living systems. She’s the CEO of Heller Communication Design, the Chair of the Board of PopTech, and the Chair of the Design for Social Innovation MFA at School of Visual Arts.

EMILY FISCHER: “Stick Maps and Stone Men”
Before GPS and satellite communications, people used sticks and stones to find their way. In 2011 we need to relearn how to use action and our haptic sense to root ourselves to the physical world. People are splitting into two selves: one body is invisible and built of information, bonded to a network via mobile devices— while our other body is still a corporeal lump of nerve endings and immense feelings. What defines our humanness isn’t just our intellectual curiosities but our physical lives and the real physical world our bodies occupy. Stick Maps and Stone Men are more useful than iPhones.

8 years ago Fischer was an architecture student that had a lot of weird interests... quilting, kite-making, literature, non-euclidean geometry... She spent 5 years working professionally as a misfit architect in different NYC firms until she struck out on her own in 2009 when she founded the Haptic Lab. Haptic makes things that promote embodiment through design.

EMILY JACOBI: “How mobile phones and whistles will save a generation of women in Haiti”
Jacobi has been working with women who lost everything to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, which left them vulnerable to horrific things - rape, theft, attacks & cholera. Despite the most brutal obstacles, they are organizing to combat and prevent violence, advocating for justice, and providing critical services to other women and girls facing violence. In partnership with Digital Democracy, these women have been using technology in many exciting ways: documenting their situation through photography, blogs & video, digitizing their knowledge & creating new data sets, and using mobiles to monitor and respond to the crisis, these are empowered women fighting for justice in their community, collectively acting in solidarity to solve these challenges.

Jacobi is co-founder & Executive Director of Digital Democracy, a New York City-based nonprofit that works globally to empower marginalized communities with digital technologies. She has led media & technology projects on four continents, ridden a camel in Timbuktu, and helped organize [name redacted for security purposes], the world's largest barcamp in one of the most repressive countries.

EMILY LUTZKER: “The Dog ate my Innovation”
This talk is a semi-humorous infusion of critical thinking into everyday life exploring the concepts "innovation" and "new."  Using references from critical theory, Lutzker will discuss "the new," the new fascination with newness, new technology, illusions of the new, allusions to the new and excuses we all have for not recognizing and adopting the new when everyone else does. Then, she will present some theories about "smartness" and the "new smartness" and how that's very 1990's -- read: not new. To wrap up, I will use examples of some smart old things to demonstrate how everything old is smart again or perhaps, the newness doesn't make us smart at all. Instead, she proposes that if we forget our smartness we'll have a chance to remember our innovation.

Emily Lutzker, PhD is the Founder and CEO of OpenInvo.com - a platform for innovation. She is a former artist and stand-up (h)ac(k)ademic turned entrepreneur.

ERIC SKIFF: “Pluggable Culture”
Increasingly, we live in a world of powerful pluggable pieces. Invention is evolving from engineers’ work into something much more akin to cooking, where creators mix in ingredients to make something delicious and unique. That shift is enabling a new generation of makers and entrepreneurs to fit those prebuilt parts together quickly and build on them. Forget reinventing the wheel - stop reinventing the car!

Skiff is the cofounder of YAYfriends and NYCResistor, a Drop.io alum, BarCamp Organizer, and unapologetic geek!

FERNANDA COHEN: "Art + Commerce"
Fernanda Cohen will talk about how she combines fine arts with commercial art, AKA illustration, along with conferences, networking events, writing and teaching.  She will discuss how helping promote other people's careers has helped her build her own, why the more you do for yourself the more you get hired to do for others, and how the day can have more than 24 hours.

Cohen grew up in Buenos Aires and moved to New York City in 2000 to study illustration at the School of Visual Arts. Her work has received over 50 awards worldwide and she is a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts; she’s on the advisory board of 3x3 Magazine, the vice president of ICON6 (The Illustration Conference), and the coordinator of a lecture series at the Society of Illustrators of New York.

JERRI CHOU: “Condoms, Enterprise and Making Women's Empowerment Sexy”
Condoms are not sexy. While men are the primary target for purchasing condoms, they have everything to do with women. Yet very few condom companies get anywhere close to first base.... What happens when you put women at the helm of a condom company? More specifically, design savvy social entrepreneurial women who are ambitious enough to take on the AIDS epidemic, experienced enough to address the social side, capable enough to change an industry, and savvy enough to create a movement while doing it. To say that the tone changes is an understatement.

Chou is the co-founder of All Day Buffet, The Feast, TBD, and Lovely Day. She believes we created this world and that we can create a better one.

NICK GIGLIA: “Around the World in 1,000 Beers”
A random conversation in a London bar completely changed Nick’s life. He was a 20-year-old American student on a semester abroad, who had previously drunk whatever his of-age roommates bought him. One night, when he ordered a Stella Artois the bartender burst out laughing, telling him he needed some taste. Nick challenged himself to get some taste during that semester, and never stopped. He’s now closing in on 1,000 different beers...  Join him for a look at his trip around the world (and the beer world), including life lessons through beer, tasting tips, and how you should never consider any conversation insignificant.

Giglia is founder and CEO of Fahros, seeking to democratize corporate IT through cloud computing.  He gets inordinately excited about the yearly pumpkin ale release and wishes Samuel Adams would release Old Fezziwig in 6 packs.

TAHIR HEMPHILL: “Champagne Always Stains My Silk”
Using The Hip-Hop Word Count: A Searchable Rap Almanac, Hemphill will show how one can do a keyword search for the most popular CHAMPAGNE mentioned in Hip-Hop from 1979-2010. He will show beautiful data visualization results of the research: http://bit.ly/kickstarthhwc

TERRY JONES: “What the Post-It Note Can Teach Us About Apps and Data”
In our everyday lives we constantly publish and consume information in ad hoc, unanticipated and highly idiosyncratic ways. But with computers, our experiences are often awkward and rigid, and our actions must be anticipated and permitted.  Using familiar examples, this talk will focus on this disparity and argue that people are actually very clever at working with information, and that those things point towards thinner applications that let people interact more directly with information and towards computational storage that works more like Post-it ® notes.

Jones is CEO & founder of Fluidinfo, a New York startup aiming to change how people and companies work with information.

TODD SAWICKI: “History of Online Advertising: The Real Story”

Here's the real scoop on everything from the 1st banner ad to where spam came from to the rise of the dreaded pop – its all explained so you’ll really know who to blame!
