Starting Your Business 101 - November 1, 8, 15, and 23 Workshops

I heard about Asian Women in Business from a guy I met (Ashok Parameswaran) at a Social Entrepreneur Meetup last night.  He said that you don't need to be Asian to attend these events, as they're pretty open, and I'm guessing a few guys might show up (like at Women Advancing Microfinance events).  For questions, contact info@awib.org (as listed on the website, www.awib.org).

Cheers,

Katharine

Acumen Fund fall fundraiser meeting tonight, September 27

Just saw this on the Acumen Fund community site - helping plan this fundraiser would be a great way to get involved with New York for Acumen!

In case you didn't already know, Acumen Fund is: "a non-profit global venture fund that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty. We seek to prove that small amounts of philanthropic capital, combined with large doses of business acumen, can build thriving enterprises that serve vast numbers of the poor. Our investments focus on delivering affordable, critical goods and services – like health, water, housing and energy – through innovative, market-oriented approaches."

Happy volunteering,

Katharine
----------------------

Dear NYfA Volunteers,

Please join us next Monday, September 27th for our first fall fundraiser planning meeting.

We are envisioning an event which celebrates South Asia - culture, food, music, etc. We'd love for the event to have a silent auction, a renowned DJ and great food for an evening that celebrates Acumen's successes in
the region.

As many of you know, our last fundraiser - *spark, which took place in May - raised $25,000 for Acumen Fund and was a resounding success thanks to our dedicated and exceptional volunteers.

So, if you would like a hands-on role with Acumen Fund, please join us on Monday! We'll be creating committees to oversee Sponsorship, Marketing, PR, Budgeting, Venue, Day-Of Logistics, Design, and Ticket Sales.

Please email us at newyorkforacumen@gmail.com to let us know if you plan on attending, or if you'd like to help us but are unable to attend.

Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you tonight!

Women's Network for a Sustainable Future - Events on October 5

I heard about the Women's Network for a Sustainable Future from an email list or a LinkedIn group - I can't quite remember.  Their events are a little pricey for recent college graduates like myself, but I just thought I should share the info in case any of you, dear readers, are interested.
Happy networking!
Katharine
----------------

Who they are:
Women’s Network for a Sustainable Future (WNSF), a 501 (c) 3 corporation, is the premier sustainability organization for women in business. Its substantive and highly practical programs featuring responsible, high-performance business practices, help businesswomen assume major roles championing sustainability.
WNSF works to achieve an important outcome -more businesswomen providing strong sustainability leadership in more organizations, demonstrably advancing companies’ progress in applying sustainable practices.

Our programs engage businesswomen in sustainability; advance women’s knowledge of sustainability principles and practices; and advance women’s skills in developing and leading sustainability initiatives in their companies. They are highly effective because they promote learning from best practices, including the formal sharing of how companies have achieved high performance by applying sustainability principles, as well as through creative collaboration and on-going peer-to-peer support.

WNSF reaches more than 5000 executive women annually who want to make a difference in their companies and the world - through regional in-person programs and increasingly, through web-based programming and communications. Anyone is welcome to attend WNSF programs - fees are charged for most events.

October 27 event for 85 Broads & HBS Members in Old Greenwich, CT - on Grameen Foundation

Dear friends,

This is a more exclusive event compared to some ones that I've posted, but.... I'd like to share it anyway.  If you're a woman professional or college student, you can become a member of 85 Broads and go to this.  If you happen to be male, to go to this event you have to have gone to Harvard.  (If not, stay tuned for future events.)

I'm including this because this is a shout-out to all you women who want to make a difference and meet awesome people who are doing the same.  I joined 85 Broads this August and was lucky enough to meet the founder, Janet Hanson, who is a totally amazing business rockstar and inspirational figure.  I'd recommend checking out her book, More than 85 Broads, if you're also interested in "Making Career Choices, Taking Risks, and Defining Success - On Their [Your] Own Terms."

About the event sponsor/host
What is Social Entrepreneurship at Stern?
Social entrepreneurship holds the promise of effectively addressing, if not solving, some of society's most intractable social problems.  Social entrepreneurship is the process of creating value by identifying and resourcefully pursuing opportunities in the pursuit of high social returns.
The Satter Program in Entrepreneurship is to educate, challenge, and inspire social entrepreneurs to leverage intellectual, social, and financial capital resources with a focus on social change, innovation, and impact.
We provide support and create an environment in which social entrepreneurs’ ideas and initiatives take shape and flourish.  Much of this involves:
  • Providing the training and skills that enable social entrepreneurs to create, grow, and accelerate their businesses and social value propositions.
  • Allowing opportunities that secure strategic technical support and financial resources.
  • Imparting new approaches and methodologies that align practice and research to improve the overall effectiveness and impact of the social venture.
  • Creating a community of students, scholars, and industry leaders devoted to improving the social sector.
The Satter Program was made possible by the generous support of NYU Stern alumnus Stewart Satter, Stern MBA '82 and CEO of Consumer Testing Laboratories, who has donated the seed money for the launch.

Women Advancing Microfinance NY fundraiser + wine tasting on Oct. 12

I just became a member of the NY chapter of Women Advancing Microfinance yesterday.  It's $40/year, or $60 for the end of 2010 plus all of 2011.  If you're interested in reasonably sized (30-60 person) networking events around microfinance and the intersection of business and social impact, check this out.  You don't have to be female to attend (there are always 2-5 guys at every event).  That said, as a woman professional myself, it's great to be part of an amazing, supportive, and dynamic group like WAM!

I encourage you to check out their next fundraiser (below) and wine tasting event.

Happy networking!

7 Life Lessons from the Millennium Campus Conference

Dear friends,

I just wanted to give a special shout-out to everyone who was involved in planning, organizing, and attending the Millennium Campus Conference 2010 at Columbia University this weekend (www.mcc2010.com or #MCC2010 on Twitter).  I had a great time, met a TON of cool people, and got super inspired to keep doing great things against poverty / to make the world a better place / to do your thing for social impact.
Towards that end, I'd like to share the 7 Life Lessons from Adam Braun, founder of Pencils of Promise, and a speaker at the conference yesterday:

1.  Get out of your comfort zone
-not all who wander are lost!
2.  Speak the language of the person you want to become (what's next?)
3.  Embrace those late, sleepless nights.  Strange things happen when you've gone too far, been up too long, worked too hard, and separated from the rest of the world.
4.  To achieve unreasonable things, you have to become an unreasonable person.
5.  Just go. A backpack and a handful of courage is all you need.
6.  Find your cause and live it.
7.  The single greatest power of youth is the resounding belief that the impossible can be made possiblel.
-be hope-less-ly idealistic about the things that make you feel most alive.

Sound advice for anyone in nonprofits, starting a business, or just ground rules for life.

Good luck with your endeavors!

Katharine
