Dear WAM Members,

We are delighted to invite you to our Second Annual Scholarship Fundraiser on Thursday, October 6th 2011. This year we are raising funds for women microfinance practitioners from the Global South to attend specialized training programs and conferences to strengthen their skills and leadership opportunities.

WAM-NY's focus on capacity building of women microfinance practitioners stems from the belief that a sector in which the majority of clients are women will benefit significantly from women's leadership on how best to serve female clients' needs.  We believe that specialized training will facilitate women's transition from mid- to senior-level positions within microfinance institutions.

Join us for an evening of revelry over wine tasting, food, and silent auction/raffle prizes. As a benefit to our members, we are offering an early bird special offer of $65 if you buy your ticket before September 15. Do not miss this special event!

Through funds raised last year, FIVE women from the following organizations attended either the Small Enterprise Education and Promotion (SEEP) Network Annual Conference or a Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program (SMDP) training: Fonkoze (Haiti), CEOSS (Egypt), K-MET (Kenya), Women's Trust (Ghana) and FECECAV (Togo).

100% of the proceeds from the event will go towards the scholarship funds.

We lookin forward to seeing you on October 6!

Developers,
The awesome team at LetGive (you may have met CEO Josh and Lead Developer Izzy at last month's Open Hours) is sponsoring a contest to help developers include charitable giving in their apps. If you've ever had the joy of trying to hook your favorite non-profit up with mobile donations, you know - it's not joyful, it's a huge hassle, sometimes impossible, and it's awesome that LetGive is here to make it easy!
The contest kicks off September 6 and has a prize of $1,000 and hopefully lots of donations to your cause. Sign up at http://www.letgive.com/hackforgood.

Here are the official details:
Calling all App Developers, Game Developers, and Hackers,
LetGive is inviting you to take place in our first annual LetGive “Hack For Good” contest--the first time (well, to our knowledge!) that developers can build an app or game in support of a charity of your choice.  The contest will take place during the month of September, with a kick-off event (food and drink provided) on September 6th and an awards ceremony in mid-October.  Stay tuned for more on the awards event, as we're working with our awesome judges to lock down the date.
Details, details, details...
LetGive has created an API that allows anyone to include a charitable giving component within their application.   Applications built on our platform are transformed into powerful fundraising vehicles for Nonprofits and Charities.
The first application built on the platform is an alarm clock that resides on your iPhone.  When you hit the Snooze button, a donation is triggered to the charity of your choice.
Any type of application (game, newsreader, calendar, alarm clock, mail reader, map/location based, Twitter/Facebook client) can be turned into a giving application.  If you need inspiration for an app, reach out!  We’ve got tons of thought starters to throw your way: hackforgood@letgive.com.

We’re lining up some amazing Non Profits to provide inspiration, great judges to help pick the best app, and a $1,000 prize for the winning entry.  For more details or to register, please visit http://www.letgive.com/hackforgood/.

Aug. 16 dinner discussion of social venture capital

Hello everyone,

Please see below for a great upcoming discussion/dinner around social venture capital, which I'm planning to go to. If you're interested in coming too, please email me at kbierce [at gmail dotcom].

Happy networking

Katharine

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Good Afternoon,

My name is Elizabeth Friedrich and I wanted to setup a meeting for young professionals who want to learn more about social investment, social venture capital, community development venture capital and traditional venture capital. Either they are entrepreneurs or they would like to develop a fund in the future. I did my thesis on these topics and I would to share my knowledge and possibly connect with people who are interested.

Please send me any questions you have or specific agenda items you'd like to discuss. I hope we can have a fruitful discussion that could lead to the development of a working group.

The meeting has been set for August 16th at 7:30 pm, at Double Crown in the Bowery. That's at 316 Bowery, NYC, map here.

Thank You
Elizabeth Friedrich
