7PM Learning Feature Hierarchies for Vision

This month we're very lucky to have Yann LeCun from Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Center for Neural Science at NYU presenting "Learning Feature Hierarchies for Vision." Here's Yann's abstract: Intelligent perceptual tasks such as vision and audition require the construction of good internal representations. Theoretical and empirical evidence suggest that the perceptual world is best represented by a multi-stage hierarchy in which features in successive stages are increasingly global, invariant, and abstract. An important challenge for Machine Learning is to devise "deep learning" methods than can automatically learn good feature hierarchies from labeled and unlabeled data.

Tuesday, February 15th

5:30PM NYC Software Process Improvement Network: We Need It Before The End Of The Year: What’s Your Estimate?

No matter what your position on a project you must be a good estimator of your work, and it is a cardinal sin to let good estimates by smart people get overwhelmed by the strong desires of powerful people. Accurate estimates are the foundation of all critical project decisions regarding staffing, functionality, delivery date, and budget. How do we accurately estimate in a world where tradition declares that the deadline is set before the requirements are even known? Tim Lister will offer practical advice on dealing with this thorny issue.  We think this talk will run two hours, but we're really not sure at all.  That's why we're going.

RSVP: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/1131162337/

6:30PM Founders @FAIL: Mike McCready and the story of Polyphonic

Way before Pandora ever outed you as a Phil Collins fan or Amazon suggested you might also like to buy a spatula with that hot plate, Mike McCready was using statistical analysis and signal processing to predict if the latest pop songs would become hit singles.  Yet, the failure dog buried a bone in his backyard.  Come hear the story.

RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/foundersatfail/events/16069282/

6:30PM Arts/Tech Social Media Week Edition: Social Media Art

Well, technically it's the week *after* Social Media Week, but if Restaurant Week can go on for 2-3 weeks at a time, why not Social Media Week? Either way, we'll be looking at how artists are integrating social media into their art making practice.  This month's event is exploring the creative overlap between social media and the arts. Instead of the usual discussion of Facebook fans and Twitter followers, we wanted to take a look at some of the most inventive implementations of social media we've come across: social media art experiments.

RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/Arts-Culture-and-Technology/events/16369364/

6:30PM food+tech: Real Time Farms Demo

Real Time Farms is going to give us an introduction to their site and their newly launched features--enabling you to track your food digitally from farm to fork.  Somewhere, there's a cow tweet joke in there somewhere.

6PM Extreme Hiring: Applying agile principles to hire better developers

A few months ago, we had a Fishbowl Discussion on what makes a good Agile developer.  But now that we know what we want, how do we go about finding and hiring them?  There are better ways to find and interview good candidates than just looking at a resume and then asking a few technical questions.  How do we test for "pairing" and TDD fanatics? Come join our discussion as we focus on how to find and hire good Agile developers.

RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/xp-26/events/16250386/

6:30PM #OpenNY's Feb Meetup - @CodeforAmerica, #iCities & #OpenGov in Thailand

Hot off the heals of GovGeeks & Drinks and Social Media Week, once again we are hosting our monthly OpenNY Forum Meetup at New Work City. For February, we will discuss the following important issues:

1. Code for America, what is it and what is the DC team working on?
2. Intelligent Cities Conference (#iCities), what is it and how can you attend?

High Water Women's Young Women's Council (YWC) is presenting a two part series entitled "Women in Finance and an Introspective Look at Our Careers". What better way to kick off 2011 than furthering our careers by gaining a better understanding of how to present ourselves when it's our turn to brag (i.e. performance review time) and a focus on the role of our mentors and sponsors.
PART I: Book Discussion: "Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It" by Peggy Klaus
Date:
Wednesday, February 16th  (rescheduled after snow storm)
Time: 7 PM-8:30 PM
Location: Midtown Wine Bar - Details TBA
We look forward to a great discussion on how to "self-promote" in a sincere and effective way! This is a great introduction to Peggy Klaus' book, ahead of the April "Brag Party" hosted by Peggy for high school juniors from the Young Women's Leadership Schools. Reading the book before hand is definitely not necessary but is recommended.  Sign up now… we have a few seats left!
PART II: Round Table Discussion & Networking on the Harvard Business School Case Study: "Why Men Still Get More Promotions than Women"
Date:
Wednesday, February 23rd
Time: 7 PM-9:00 PM
Location: TBA
Sponsorship versus mentorship? What's the difference? And why is it important to us as women? Meet us for a conversation on why sponsorship matters, especially for women. We look forward to your thoughts as well! A 10 minute interview with the author can be found here:  http://hbr.org/2010/09/why-men-still-get-more-promotions-than-women/ar/1

12PM How Social Commerce and Mobile Change the Way We Make Decisions and Shop

Technology is evolving in such a way that previously distinguishable digitalized information formats, services, applications, networks, and business models are blending in ways that reduce distinctions.  Objective: Highlight why and how  convergence is impacting marketing, advertising and sales. Provide a deeper dive into mobile and social commerce and what this means for brands.

RSVP: http://www.amiando.com/smwnysaatchi.html

3PM Gamify Me: How Game Mechanics Have Infiltrated Marketing

Winning points or badges, sitting atop a leader board and getting to the next level are all actions that we have grown accustomed to.  Now marketers are incorporating these activities to encourage desirable behavior.  We will talk about who is winning using game mechanics and how marketers can avoid getting blasted.  Editors note:  Here's a pretty simple rule...  Game mechanics are not a bolt on.  You can't just "add game mechanics" to something that wasn't designed to be a game in the first place.  If you read this line, you get 10 points.

RSVP: http://www.amiando.com/gamifyme.html
