Resources and Volunteering Opportunities in NYC after the Hurricane



Whether you need help or can offer help of any kind, see below for some resources for New Yorkers affected by Hurricane Sandy.

My apartment has no electricity, heat, or Internet, too.

There is a group called The Brown Cross consisting of anyone who wants to volunteer and help those, clean out  basements and move furniture etc. They do a lot of heavy labor operations, but heavy labor is not the only thing needed there though---you can meet up with this group and help hand out supplies in the areas that they are helping in. 

They meet everyday at:
  80 Marine Way 
  Staten Island, NY
After the meeting, they then choose where they need to go.
(This location is 1.4 miles east of the New Dorp stop on the Staten Island Railroad.)

For heavy labor operations, hammers, sledge hammers, crowbars, garbage bags, work gloves, face masks are needed to do the work and needed in supply to give to others to do the work.  You'd definitely have to wear tall rubber boots, and clothes that you dont mind getting dirty in as there's a huge mess out there.

A few ways you can get involved in the recovery process ......
The Red Cross expects this to be a large and costly relief response across several states, one that continues for several days, and they need your help now as they work on opening up and maintaining many shelters for those who were forced to evacuate their homes. So donate to or volunteer for the Red Cross.

There are a few recovery organizing sites that allow people to offer/request assistance, and are coordinated by the folks at Occupy NYC and community organizations on the ground including Lower East Side Recovers and Astoria Recovers, Red Hook Recovers and Staten Island Recovers.

You can sign up to volunteer at the NYC Public Advocate's Office.

Craig Newmark of Craigslist and CraigConnects is matching the next $25K in donations to help Hurricane Sandy relief efforts and United Airlines Foundation will contribute up to $50,000 to match donations to the American Red Cross, Feeding America or AmeriCares.

You can also donate blood via the NY Blood Center.  

NY Tech Meetup and New Work City are organizing volunteers with technology skills to help with relief efforts and help New York-area businesses and organizations get their technology back up and running after Hurricane Sandy. Here is the signup form.
