Aug. 12, 15, 16, 17, 18 backpack drive - volunteering event

Looking for a great volunteering opportunity with cool people in NYC? See the latest High Water Women event below.
Happy volunteering,
Katharine
------------

Please Help the High Water Women
2011 Backpack Drive
Thanks to our fabulous fund raising committee we have been able to raise a record amount of donations that will enable us to provide 6500 backpacks to children in need.   Assembling these backpacks with the assortment of school supplies we've been able to purchase and getting them out the door to our nonprofit partners who will distribute them to the children, is a large-scale operation requiring the help of hundreds of volunteers.
Volunteers are needed on August 12th and from August 15th - 18th.  There are multiple two-hour shifts available each day.  It's fun to stuff backpacks and we very much need an army of volunteers to make this happen!  Please come solo, bring a group of family (children over 12) or friends, or put together a work team!  Sign up now.
Location:  Credit Suisse,  One Madison Avenue, Level B (corner of 23rd St.)
We encourage you to watch this short film to see how the High Water Women Backpack Drive helps children start the school year ready to learn. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPau4_tTHBg

SIB Learning Hub 6/9 Webinar Recording Sign up for E-News Join us on Twitter! NFF Home

Upcoming Webinar

"The Impact on Service Providers: Opportunities and Challenges
of PFS/SIB Participation"

Join us on on July 28th from 3:00pm – 4:15pm EST

In our last webinar on Pay for Success projects and Social Impact Bonds (PFS/SIB), "First Mover States, What are They Doing and Why?", spokesmen from Massachusetts and Minnesota described their states' approaches to investigating and piloting potential PFS/SIB projects. These two states are taking different approaches to engaging state government and investors. However, one thing they clearly have in common is that their success will depend on the participation of high-performing service providers with a track record of successfully executing and measuring evidence-based programs.

To date, the public dialog on PFS/SIB has provided little opportunity for the service provider voice to be heard. In the July 28th webinar, leaders of three high-performing U.S.-based nonprofit organizations representing diverse social missions and service territories will share their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges of participating in PFS/SIB projects. Each will discuss their views on:
  • the resources, capacities and skills providers will need in order to participate successfully in PFS/SIB
  • the potential opportunities and benefits PFS/SIB can have for service providers and the constituencies they serve
  • risks and other obstacles they may face in participating in PFS/SIB
  • any recommendations for service providers who may be interested in investigating PFS/SIB
Panelists
Deborah DeSantis, President and CEO, Corporation for Supportive Housing
The Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) helps communities create permanent housing with services to prevent and end homelessness. CSH delivers its core services in Washington, D.C. and in eleven states: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island and Texas.

Jeff Edmondson, President, Strive
Serving Greater Cincinnati, Strive is focused on the success of children: every child, every step, from cradle to career. Strive unites common providers around shared issues, goals, measurements and results, and then actively supports and strengthens strategies that work.

Dorothy Stoneman, YouthBuild USA
YouthBuild is a youth and community development program that simultaneously addresses core issues facing low-income communities: housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. There are YouthBuild programs in 45 states, Washington, DC, and the Virgin Islands.

TEDxGotham July 13 simulcast

I'm a huge fan of TED talks (www.ted.com) since they are just about the best way to get distilled knowledge in an easy to understand format.  And I don't have a TV.  I try to get up at 7 am a few days a week and watch a few TED talks on my treadmill in my apartment before going to work.  It's a great way to start the day and get inspired about life.
Anyway, TEDxGotham has a simulcast of the TED conference in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 13, so check it out!
~Katharine

July 2 (event tonight) for a great cause

Another StartingBloc Fellow I know is having a fundraiser party in Brooklyn tonight.  The purpose is to help raise money so she can pay her college tuition (financial aid doesn't cover everything) so she can keep inspiring young people to take action to lead the lives they want to lead.... It should be a great party and she's doing terrific work, so check it out!
Cheers,
Katharine

Tonight I am having an event powered by the good folks at CARTER Magazine to raise funds to pay my tuition for my fall semester of undergrad.

Picture 10.png
Date: Saturday, July 2, 2011
Time: 9:00pm - Until
Location: Alchemist Lounge
31 Rockwell Place bet. Fulton and Dekalb
                 Brooklyn, NY 11217
$5 minimum cover, generosity is welcome
$5 Drink Specials
Food Served

Special Guest DJ

Over the past 3 months I have been applying for Financial Aid – submitting paperwork and re-submitting paperwork, to only be informed that the funding will not cover the entirety of my Fall 2011 bill, and I have until July 7th, 2011 to raise the remaining balance: $2,000.

My Purpose:
Is to inspire young people into action

Here is what I have been up to:
  • I have created The SWT Life Conversation which is a pilot program designed to provide (teens ages 14-17) with a clear understanding of how to use their passions, strengths and purpose drive their scholastic and life success.
  • Just BE Cause which is a collection of stories, anecdotes, and wisdom from community leaders, innovators, leverage experts, executive directors and CEOs.  The book breaks down Social Entrepreneurship – providing definitions, examples, and history, – and ultimately advises Gen Y on how to use our unique values and ideology to create social change and spread the world’s wealth while doing it.
  • In addition countless articles herehere and here and my first published article in CARTER Magazine. Hunter College has really been a catalyst thus far, in terms of providing me with the tools necessary to continue my quest.
I am committed to ensuring that every young person is inspired to take action, and is aware that they can cultivate their future today. This is not an easy request for me to ask, as I prefer to figure things out on my own.  However my commitment to youth is much bigger than me.  So I am asking for your support.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Ways you can help me out :) :

1.  You can come to the event tomorrow at Alchemist Lounge and we can do the Dougie
2.  You can mail it to me if preferred (Please respond to email for my address)
3.  PayPal (I am searchable under syreeta.gates@gmail.com)

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, You're Far too Kind in Advance :)
