Hey, NYC entrepreneurs: Welcome to the Future of Media! Business Insider is holding the first annual IGNITION conference on Dec. 2-3.

And you can attend for just $225. (Hurry--first 20 respondents only.)

We're witnessing the greatest period of creative destruction -- and invention -- in the history of media. Hear from Nick Denton, Sarah Chubb, Susan Lyne, John Borthwick, Eric Hippeau, Jason Kilar, and many more on where it’s all heading.

Monday, November 15th

6PM Brandhackers "Facebook Effect" Meetup

Brand strategies- A review of the best practices (so far) that brands are employing to be invited to Social Media conversations and how Facebook humanizes brands for consumers in ways that corporate websites do not (yet). And we'll ask our experts, is the Facebook brand page the new corporate brand page?

Tactics- Getting specific on 3-4 of the most effective tools, apps and services of Facebook used by leading brands, including:

*Chris Cunningham, CEO & Founder, appssavvy
*Stephanie Agresta, Managing Director of Social Media, WEBER SHANDWICK
*Rebecca Ulanoff, Marketing Manager, WHOLE FOODS
*Myles Kleeger, General Manager of Strategic Brand Partnerships, BUDDY MEDIA

6:45PM Hoboken Tech Meetup 6: Jeff Stewart and Stephane Levy

Stephane will be speaking about the the common mistakes made by early stage startups. Stephane is an attorney at Cooley LLP, a prominent law firm focused on emerging companies.

Tuesday, November 16th

9:30AM GE: ecomagination challenge announcement Meetup!

In July, GE and four venture capital partners launched a $200 million Challenge to find and fund ideas to build the next generation power grid.  Turns out that all you need is a rich guy with a homegrown particle accelorator that can fashion a big washer into a glowing neon tube.  Power problem: solved.  They'll announce him as the winner in this event, so long as Mickey Rourke doesn't show up.  Don Cheadle?  Seriously?

6PM Mashable Meetup featuring Greg Verdino and Steve Rosenbaum

Equal parts marketer and futurist, Greg Verdino is a recognized expert on marketing innovation, emerging media and Web 2.0.  He's also bald, which means he gets automatic inclusion in this week's newsletter.

Steve Rosenbaum has been working with Curated Content since he created the groundbreaking hit MTV UNfiltered in the pre-web days. Now, as the founder and CEO of Magnify.net, runs a platform company that allows Publishers, Brands, and Web communities to embrace web content with Aggregation, Curation, and user Contributions. He's not quite as bald as Greg, but still gets some points for the brush clearing that's going on upstairs.

6:30PM CodeFree WordPress: Point-and-Click Themes

Whether you're designing a WordPress theme from scratch or modifying an existing one, most of the time you need to know some PHP, HTML or CSS. However, there are a few powerful themes that allow you to point-and-click your way to total customization. In this session we highlight two of these powerful themes and go over their customizable features.  If MacGyver used a CMS, it would definately be WordPress--because you can basically make it into anything.  For a list of problems solved by MacGyver, click here.

6:30PM Five on Food #4

This month, Five on Food is back! Meet, mingle, and hear from five group members about how they weave together food and technology.  Chip on a chip anyone?

This months hobby will feature sad songs, drawings of buildings, birdhouses, electric tennis rackets, and an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log.

9PM NY Night Owls

Expect Pizza and good tunes powered by Kelley and Jamie's project, http://tu.nr.  Just thinking... what if you showed up and slept at Night Owls.  It would make for a pretty inexpensive hotel ($12/night), and you'd get six hours of sleep.  Just something to think about if you're bootstrapping.

Rising Tide Capital - Global Entrepreneurship Week, Nov. 15-21

Just got an email from a nonprofit that does entrepreneurship training for low-wealth communities: Rising Tide Capital - they're doing a week of entrepreneur-related events in Jersey City, NJ.
Happy networking!
~Katharine
-------------------------

If you live or work near Jersey City, I am excited to invite you to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) with us starting Monday, November 15 through Sunday, November 21. There will be over 30 seminars, panel discussions, market fairs, networking and fun events brought to you by local non-profits, volunteers, business support organizations, and Rising Tide Capital.

None of these activities would have been possible without our corporate sponsors, whose generosity has enabled us to organize and market such an extensive schedule of events. Please visit www.GEWjc.org to see all the excellent opportunities to connect, learn and grow. While you are on the website, please don't forget to take the Buy Local Pledge - a simple way to show you care about small businesses.

If you live or work near Jersey City, I would particularly like to invite to our special speaker event and friendraiser on November 18th at 7PM, featuring entrepreneur and winner of Oprah's Big Give Stephen Paletta, who will discuss what it means to live a life of "success and significance."

Our fantastic volunteers on the Rising Tide Capital Strategic Advisory Board are hosting this event to support our year-round entrepreneurship programs and special initiatives like GEW in Jersey City. The evening will include a silent auction, live performance, art and refreshments curtsey of our sponsors Silverman and Hamilton Square. To RSVP, please email Nicole@RisingTideCapital.org or visit http://RisingTide.CharityHappenings.org

For those of you who live far from us, we encourage you to look out for a GEW event near you. If you can't find one, maybe you can begin to unleash the creativity of your own community by planning GEW celebrations of your own. Each of us needs to act in support of our local small businesses, in order to rebuild our economy.

                Philadelphia, PA 19104
The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

When: Saturday, December 4th, 2010, 10:00am - 5:00pm

Who: The conference is targeted towards individuals interested in social entrepreneurship and human rights, students, corporate representatives, government officials, entrepreneurs, academics, members of the international relief community and concerned global citizens.

The recent floods in Pakistan, hurricane in New Orleans, earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, tsunami in Indonesia and wildfires in Moscow have ravaged the lives of millions of people. The frequency and magnitude of large scale catastrophic disasters around the world is undeniably increasing. Of the 25 most costly insured catastrophes in the world since 1970, 17 occurred since 2001. As responsible global citizens we must recognize that the likelihood
and consequences of rising probability, high-impact disasters are significant. Due to increasing global interdependencies, we cannot treat humanitarian disasters as country-specific issues that we are not responsible for or affected by.

You are invited to the first ever 2010 Wharton conference on disaster relief: From Haiti to Pakistan: A Year of Disasters. Join this interactive conference where leading corporate and non-profit representatives, entrepreneurs, academics, and members of the international relief community will share their insights on disaster prevention, emergency relief and long term recovery. Representatives from organizations and companies including USAID, Deloitte, Amnesty International, McKinsey, General Electric, U.S. Peace Institute and EcoEnergyFinance will discuss how to assess the risks of large scale disasters and apply disaster response best practices to the current Pakistan floods crisis, and future humanitarian crises. We are thrilled to have Mr. Mark S. Ward, the Director of the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance at USAID deliver keynote remarks. We look forward to
seeing you on December 4th!

Warm Regards,

The From Haiti to Pakistan Conference Team

Dec. 10 Athena Center conference - Getting More Women on Corporate Boards

I just got this email and thought I'd share the info.  Happy networking!
~Katharine
------------------------

We are pleased to invite you to a half-day conference on Friday, December 10, 2010  that will examine important questions about diversity on corporate boards, including ways to increase the number of women in these critical leadership roles.
The conference, which will begin with a breakfast and keynote address by Esther Duflo, the Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics at MIT, is co-sponsored by the Athena Center for Leadership Studies and the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics at Columbia Business School.  We hope you can join us for a thought-provoking morning.  If registered by November 22: $45. Otherwise: $60. Please register onlineThe invitation is below:

Has The Time Come For Bolder Policies For Diversity At The Top Of The Corporation?

Friday December 10, 2010
8:00 AM – 12:30 PM

Venue: The Italian Academy
1161 Amsterdam Avenue (between 117th and 118th Streets) New York
(directions and online map).

Co-hosted by: The Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College and the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership and Ethics

Conference fee: If registered by November 22: $45. Otherwise: $60. Please register online.

The path breaking study by Rosabeth Moss Kanter proposed that women would not have easy access to top management since they lacked critical mass. In almost all countries, the percentage of female CEOs is less than 5% and female board directors hover between 10% and 15%. Given that university graduates are now at 50% female and the labor forces are also nearly equally divided by gender, the lack of penetration of women to the top of the corporation is stunning. The implication is that there are simply not enough women to change beliefs and clubs that influence the selection of top officers of the corporation. As of 2008, Norway imposed penalties for public and state-owned enterprises that failed to achieve a target of 40% of directors to be female. The few studies done on this experiment, which is being implemented elsewhere in Europe, indicate that the social justice goals of quotas also impose costs. In some cases, firms anticipated these costs and exited Norway or public listings; for those that stayed, one study showed that financial performance fell. At the same time, other research indicates that increasing diversity improves performance and increasing women changes the agenda of issues to be addressed and improves governance. What do we know about bold policies for creating diversity at the top of the corporation? What is the effect of these policies?
This conference will bring together academic and practitioner thought leaders to discuss what research and experience has told us about ways to increase diversity at the top. The conference takes for granted that diversity has an important property of social justice and other benefits, but to this adds the question at what cost to private liberties and economic performance.

Speakers include:
Esther Duflo, Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics, MIT
Debora Spar, President, Barnard College
Ann Bartel, Merrill Lynch Professor of Workforce Transformation, Chair, Economics Subdivision, Columbia Business School
Barbara Colwell BUS '80, Former Executive Director, ThinkQuest NYC
James DeGraffenreidt BUS '78, Former chairman and CEO of WGL Holdings, Inc
Amy Dittmar, Associate Professor of Finance, Stephen M. Ross School of Business
Bruce Kogut, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Professor of Leadership and Ethics; Director, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center, Columbia Business School
Kathryn Kolbert, Director, Athena Center for Leadership Studies; Professor of Leadership Studies, Barnard College
David Ross, Assistant Professor, Columbia Business School
