5:30PM NYC Software Process Improvement Network: We Need It Before The End Of The Year: What’s Your Estimate?

No matter what your position on a project you must be a good estimator of your work, and it is a cardinal sin to let good estimates by smart people get overwhelmed by the strong desires of powerful people. Accurate estimates are the foundation of all critical project decisions regarding staffing, functionality, delivery date, and budget. How do we accurately estimate in a world where tradition declares that the deadline is set before the requirements are even known? Tim Lister will offer practical advice on dealing with this thorny issue.  We think this talk will run two hours, but we're really not sure at all.  That's why we're going.

6:30PM Founders @FAIL: Mike McCready and the story of Polyphonic

Way before Pandora ever outed you as a Phil Collins fan or Amazon suggested you might also like to buy a spatula with that hot plate, Mike McCready was using statistical analysis and signal processing to predict if the latest pop songs would become hit singles.  Yet, the failure dog buried a bone in his backyard.  Come hear the story.

6:30PM Arts/Tech Social Media Week Edition: Social Media Art

Well, technically it's the week *after* Social Media Week, but if Restaurant Week can go on for 2-3 weeks at a time, why not Social Media Week? Either way, we'll be looking at how artists are integrating social media into their art making practice.  This month's event is exploring the creative overlap between social media and the arts. Instead of the usual discussion of Facebook fans and Twitter followers, we wanted to take a look at some of the most inventive implementations of social media we've come across: social media art experiments.

6PM Extreme Hiring: Applying agile principles to hire better developers

A few months ago, we had a Fishbowl Discussion on what makes a good Agile developer.  But now that we know what we want, how do we go about finding and hiring them?  There are better ways to find and interview good candidates than just looking at a resume and then asking a few technical questions.  How do we test for "pairing" and TDD fanatics? Come join our discussion as we focus on how to find and hire good Agile developers.

The success of every company hinges on having a great team, from the CEO and founders in the early stages down to the managers and employees as the company grows.  But how do you go about (i) finding those rare “A-players”, (ii) putting together a ”killer” core team and (iii) building a group that that can allow the company to take full advantage of its opportunities.  Come and learn how to build a great team/company from 2 successful guest CEO’s, who will join Best Practices host Joe Chin, serial CEO, in an interactive discussion: Lucinda Duncalfe Holt, CEO of ClickEquations, and Steven Krien, CEO of Organized Wisdom
