August 26 Event Review - Net Impact Brooklyn Navy Yard Tour and Panel Discussion at Brooklyn Brewery

August 26 Event Review:
Net Impact Brooklyn Navy Yard Tour and Panel Discussion at Brooklyn Brewery

This event was probably one of my favorite events in NYC so far, for several reasons:
-Net Impact is a great organization doing a lot to connect people interested in social impact to ways to get involved (e.g. their Service Corps pro bono consulting program, annual conference, job listings if you’re a member, etc.)
-Great itinerary
-Great people
-Diverse age range (recent grads/people my age up to experienced professionals/a few business owners)
-pizza and the best on tap from the Brooklyn Brewery (I recommend their Weissbier, since 1 drink was included with the price of admission)

I joined Net Impact as a recent graduate for about $50/1 year and this was my first event – which made me want to get more involved with the organization.

It started off with a tour (by bus, but you get out and walk on foot) of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, by a guy who started Urban Oyster tours (they have food tours, beer tours, and history-oriented tours).  Then we went to the Brooklyn Brewery to hear a panel discussion about industry, manufacturing, and sustainable development in Brooklyn and in NYC as a whole. On the panel were the owner of the Brooklyn Brewery, the co-founder of IceStone, a company that makes recycled glass/concrete countertops (with HQ at the Navy Yard), a sociology professor, and an architect.  After the panel, a few people who didn’t go home at 10 pm went to a nearby bar to continue the conversation until later that night.

Net Impact NYC Brooklyn Navy Yard Tour / Brewery / Panel Discussion Ratings
Overall – 4/4 (Topics I’m interested in, great people, useful connections)
Noise – 4/4 – outdoor/bus tour and panel discussion
People – good breadth (variety of backgrounds), good depth (e.g. panel discussion – informative and interesting)
Food – 2.5/4 – I had a sandwich before the event, but they had some pizza available
Clothing – business casual or “jeans and a nice shirt”
Approximate Gender Ratio – about 60% women, 40% men
Age Range – early 20s-50s, maybe a few 60s
Cost – $10, or $11.24 with the EventBrite registration fees
very heavily and you could probably get in with a friend who went to the “right” school)

Happy networking!
